The Department of Education, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 1(3) and (4) of the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Education Reform (1989 Order) (Commencement No. 8) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997.
2. In this Order “the 1989 Order” means the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989.
3. Article 6(1) and (2) of and Schedule 2 to the 1989 Order(2) in so far as they relate to the compulsory contributory subjects, History or Geography or Business Studies or Economics or Political Studies or Home Economics or Social and Environmental Studies, shall come into operation—
(a)on 28th March 1997 in relation to pupils in the first year of the fourth key stage; and
(b)on 1st August 1997 in relation to pupils in the second year of the fourth key stage.
4. Article 6(1) and (2) of and Schedule 2 to the 1989 Order in so far as they relate to the compulsory contributory subjects, French or German or Italian or Spanish or Irish, and Articles 5(5) and 11(1)(e) of the 1989 Order shall come into operation—
(a)on 28th March 1997 in relation to pupils in the first year of the fourth key stage; and
(b)on 1st August 1997 in relation to pupils in the second year of the fourth key stage.

This Order makes a number of subjects compulsory at key stage 4 of the Northern Ireland Curriculum on 28th March 1997 in relation to pupils in the first year of that key stage and on 1st August 1997 in relation to pupils in the second year of that key stage. The subjects are: History or Geography or Business Studies or Economics or Political Studies or Home Economics or Social and Environmental Studies; and French or German or Italian or Spanish or Irish.

The following provisions of the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989 have been brought into force or will be brought into force by commencement orders made before the date of this Order.
