Trafford Borough Council (hereinafter referred to as “The Council”) make this Scheme in exercise of their powers under Section 106(3) and 108 of the Highways Act 1980 and of all other enabling powers:—
1. The Council are authorised to construct over the navigable waters of the Bridgewater Canal the bridges specified in the Schedules to this Scheme as part of the highways which they are proposing to construct at the A5063 Trafford Road/White City Gyratory System in the area of Stretford and Old Trafford in the said Borough of Trafford.
2. The Council are also authorised in connection with the construction of the said bridges to divert by reduction of the width that part of the navigable watercourse specified in the said Schedules in the manner specified in these Schedules.
3. This Scheme may be cited as “The Borough of Trafford (A5063 Trafford Road/White City Gyratory System Canal Bridges) Scheme 1993”.
From a point north of the centre-line of the Bridgewater Canal in the Borough of Trafford, 16 metres east of the south eastern corner of the Liverpool Warehouse and 38 metres west southwest of the north western corner of the White City Newsagency. To a point south of the centre-line of the Bridgewater Canal 20 metres south east of the south eastern corner of the Liverpool Warehouse and 44 metres south west of the north western corner of the White City Newsagency.
Precast, prestressed concrete beams on masonry faced abutments.
14.8 metres (approximately) clear span square to the centre-line of the Bridgewater Canal, 15.0 metres (approximately) skew length between abutments.
Overall width of 20.7 metres (approximately), comprising 7.0 metres carriageway (2 × 3.5 metre lanes) and 2 × footways/verges with minimum width of 2.5 metres each.
4.15 metres minimum headroom above Bridgewater Canal water level.
The existing north canal bank and towpath will be retained. A new southern canal bank retaining wall is proposed to be constructed in front of the existing canal bank over a length of 148 metres and will link the West Canal Bridge with the East Canal Bridge.This would have the effect of reducing the minimum waterway width from 12.5 metres to 9.5 metres.
From a point north of the centre-line of the Bridgewater Canal in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford 18 metres south of the access to the National Westminster Bank car park and 53 metres west northwest of the southern abutment to the footbridge over the Bridgewater Canal.To a point south of the centre-line of the Bridgewater Canal, 32 metres south east of the access to the National Westminster car park, 43 metres west of the southern abutment to the footbridge over the Bridgewater Canal.
Precast, prestressed concrete beams on the masonry faced abutments.
14.8 metres (approximately) clear span square to the centre-line of the Bridgewater Canal, 17.6 metres (approximately) skew length between abutments.
Overall width of 21.8 metres (approximately), comprising 14.0 metres carriageway (4 × 3.5 metre lanes) and 2 × footways/verges with minimum width of 2.5 metres each.
4.35 metres minimum headroom above the Bridgewater Canal water level.
