Whereas in pursuance of section 32 of the Medical Act 1983(1) the General Medical Council have made the Medical Practitioners Registration (Fees) (Amendment) Regulations 1990 as set out in the Schedule to this Order:
And whereas by subsection (8) of the said section such regulations shall not have effect until approved by Order of the Privy Council:
Now, therefore, Their Lordships, having taken the said regulations into consideration, are hereby pleased to approve the same.
This Order may be cited as the General Medical Council (Registration (Fees) (Amendment) Regulations) Order of Council 1991.

The General Medical Council in exercise of their powers under section 32 of the Medical Act 1983 hereby make the following regulations:–
1.—(1) These regulations may be cited as the Medical Practitioners Registration (Fees) (Amendment) Regulations 1990 and shall come into force on 1st February 1991, with the exception of Regulation 4 (increase in annual retention fee) which shall come into force on 1st May 1991.
(2) In these regulations “the principal regulations” means the Medical Practitioners Registration (Fees) Regulations 1985(2).
2. The Medical Practitioners Registration (Fees) (Amendment) Regulations 1987(3)) are hereby revoked.
3.—(1) For Regulation 3 of the principal regulations there shall be substituted the following:–
“(2) The scrutiny fee shall be:–
(a)For an application under section 19:
(i)in the case of a person who has been provisionally registered ... ... ... ...£ 30
(ii)in the case of any other person ... ... ... ...£ 60
(b)For an application under section 21 ... ... ... ...£ 30
(c)For an application by virtue of section 25 ... ... ... ...£250
except in the case of a person who has obtained a primary United Kingdom qualification, when no fee shall be payable.
(d)For an application under section 27 ... ... ... ...£ 60
except in the case of a person who has held registration under this section at any time within the preceding three years, when no fee shall be payable.”
(2) For Regulation 4(2) of the principal regulations there shall be substituted the following:–
“(2) The fee for making an entry in the register shall be:–
(a)On provisional registration under section 15 of the Act ... ... ... ... £ 45
(b)On provisional registration under section 21 of the Act ... ... ... ... £ 80
(c)On full registration under section 3 of the Act:
(i)in the case of a person who is or has at any time been provisionally registered ... ... ... ...£ 90
(ii)in the case of any other person ... ... ... ...£135
except in the case of a person who is already full registered when no fee shall be payable
(d)On full registration under section 19 of the Act:
(i)in the case of a person who is or has at any time been provisionally registered ... ... ... ...£120
(ii)in the case of any other person ... ... ... ...£200
(e)On full registration by virtue of section 25 of the Act ... ... ... ... £250
(f)On registration under section 27 of the Act ... ... ... ...£200”.
4. For Regulation 6 of the principal regulations there shall be substituted the following:–
“6. The annual retention fee shall be £80.”.
5. For Regulation 15 of the principal regualtions there shall be substituted the following:–
“15. The restoration fee shall be £120.”.

The Regulations approved by this Order increase, generally with effect from 1st February 1991, the fees payable to the General Medical Council
(a)by overseas qualified medical practitioners in respect of the scrutiny of applications for registration; and
(b)by medical practitioners in respect or retention in, or restoration to, the register.
The existing fees were fixed in 1988 and the level of increase ranges between 28 and 166 per cent.
