The Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Whereas a draft of this Order has, in accordance with section 11(5) of the Justices of the Peace Act 1997(1), been laid before and approved by resolution of each House of Parliament:

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 11(4) of the Justices of the Peace Act 1997, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Maximum Number of Stipendiary Magistrates Order 1999 and shall come into force on the day after the day on which it is made.

(2) In this Order “stipendiary magistrate” means a stipendiary magistrate appointed under section 11 of the Justices of the Peace Act 1997 in any commission area or areas outside the inner London area and the City of London.

Maximum number of stipendiary magistrates

2.  The maximum number of stipendiary magistrates specified for the purposes of section 11(4) of the Justices of the Peace Act 1997 shall be 56.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order in Council provides for the maximum number of stipendiary magistrates (other than metropolitan stipendiary magistrates) appointed under the Justices of the Peace Act 1997 to be raised from 50 to 56.
