NORTHERN IRELAND

The Northern Ireland (Elections) Act 1998(Commencement) Order 1998

27th May 1998

Whereas a referendum has been held about the agreement reached at the multi-party talks on Northern Ireland set out in Command Paper 3883 and a majority of those voting supported the agreement;

Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 8(2) of the Northern Ireland (Elections) Act 1998(1), I hereby make the following Order:—

1.  This Order may be cited as the Northern Ireland (Elections) Act 1998 (Commencement) Order 1998.

2.  The provisions of the Northern Ireland (Elections) Act 1998, other than sections 2(5) and (6), 3, 6 and 8 (which are already in force), shall come into force on 28th May 1998.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order brings the provisions of the Northern Ireland (Elections) Act 1998 which are not already in force into force on 28th May 1998 consequent on the majority of those voting in the referendum on 22nd May 1998 supporting the agreement set out in Command Paper 3883.
