MERCHANT SHIPPING

The Merchant Shipping Act 1979 (Commencement No. 14) Order 1994

The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 52(2) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1979(1), hereby makes the following Order:—

1.  This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping Act 1979 (Commencement No. 14) Order 1994.

2.  The provisions of the Act specified in the first column of the Schedule to this Order (which relate to the matters specified in the second column) shall come into force on 22nd November 1994, immediately after the Coming into force of the Merchant Shipping (Sterling Equivalents) (Revocation) Order 1994(2).

Provisions of Merchant Shipping Act 1979Subject matter of provisions
Section 38(4).Replacement of gold francs by special drawing rights for certain purposes of the Merchant Shipping Act 1974.
Section 50(4) so far as it relates to the provisions of Schedule 7 set out below.Repeals.
In Schedule 7, the repeal of section 1(6) and (7) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1974.Enactment repealed.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order brings into force on 22nd November 1994 section 38(4) of the Merchant Shipping Act 1979, which substitutes special drawing rights for gold francs in certain sections of the Merchant Shipping Act 1974, as the result of the coming into force on that date of the Protocol dated 19th November 1976 to the International Convention on the Establishment of an International Fund for Compensation for Oil Pollution Damage, 1971 (Cmnd 7029). The Order also brings into force consequential repeals in the Merchant Shipping Act 1974.
