The Department for Communities makes the following Order in exercise of the powers conferred on it by sections 14 (7) of the Private Tenancies Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.(1).
1. This Order may be cited as the Private Tenancies (2022 Act) (Commencement No.1) Order (Northern Ireland) 2023.
2. The day appointed for the coming into operation of the provisions of the Private Tenancies Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 specified in the Schedule is 1st April 2023.

This Order brings into operation certain provisions of the Private Tenancies Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 which make amendments to the Private Tenancies (Northern Ireland) Order 2006. These provisions relate to tenants being given notice of certain matters relating to a tenancy including past matters and being given receipts for any cash payment made in relation to a tenancy. The Order also brings into operation provisions relating to tenancy deposits. It provides that the amount of a tenancy deposit shall be no more than one month’s rent. In addition, it increases the time limits for requirements relating to tenancy deposits and provides that certain offences in connection with tenancy deposits shall be continuing offences.
