The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development(1), in exercise of the powers conferred on it by sections 1(1) and 24(3) of the Food and Environment Protection Act 1985(2) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, being of the opinion that there no longer exist or may exist circumstances which are likely to create a hazard to human health through human consumption of certain food and that in consequence such food which is or may be in the future in the areas specified by the Orders revoked by the following Order or which is derived, or may be in the future derived from sheep in those areas, is not, or may not become, unsuitable for human consumption, hereby makes the following Order:—

(This note is not part of the Order.)
This Order revokes the Food Protection (Emergency Prohibitions) Order (Northern Ireland) 1991 (“the 1991 Order”) and the various amendments thereto. The 1991 Order contained emergency prohibitions on various activities in order to prevent human consumption of food which is derived from sheep in certain designated areas in Northern Ireland and which have been or may have been rendered unsuitable for human consumption in consequence of the elevated levels of radioactivity found in those areas following the escape of radioactive substances from a nuclear reactor situated at Chernobyl. The effect of this Order is to lift the prohibitions from the remaining designated areas of Belraugh and Glenshane in County Londonderry.
