RACE RELATIONS

The Department of Finance and Personnel, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 71(5) of the Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Race Relations (Prescribed Public Bodies) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1998 and shall come into operation on 21st February 1998.
2. The public bodies specified in the Schedule to these Regulations shall be public bodies prescribed for the purposes of Article 71(5) of the Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.

Article 71(5) of the Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 (“the 1997 Order”) provides that nothing in that Order invalidates any rules restricting employment in the service of the Crown or by public bodies prescribed under that Article to persons of particular birth, nationality, descent or residence. The same paragraph provides that the 1997 Order does not render unlawful the publication, display or implementation of such rules or the publication of advertisements stating the gist of such rules. These Regulations prescribe certain public bodies under and for the purposes of Article 71(5) of the 1997 Order.
