Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997

Coming into operation

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 50(4)(a) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 24th March 1997.

(2) In this Order “the 1981 Order” means the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981.

Increase of speed limit

2.  The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be increased from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour in relation to the restricted roads specified in Schedule 1.

Reduction of speed limit

3.  The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be reduced from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour in relation to the following restricted road, namely Newry Road, Route A25, Camlough, from a point approximately 273 metres east of its junction with Keggall Road, to a point approximately 381 metres east of that junction.

Revocations

4.  The provisions described in Schedule 2 are hereby revoked.

Article 2

SCHEDULE 1 Restricted roads on which the speed limit is increased from 30 mph to 40 mph

1.  Comber Road, Route A21, Ballygowan, from a point approximately 43 metres north of its junction with Magherascouse Road, to a point approximately 444 metres north of that junction.

2.  Culmore Road, Route A2, Culmore, County Londonderry, from a point approximately 50 metres south of its junction with Alder Road, Unclassified No. 1118, to a point approximately 541 metres north of its junction with Ardan Road, Unclassified No. 1119.

3.  Glenshane Road, Route A6, Drumahoe, County Londonderry, from a point approximately 275 metres west of its junction with Drumahoe Road, Unclassified No. 1165, to a point approximately 175 metres south-east of its junction with Tirbracken Road, Route C507.

4.  Drumadravy Road, Route B534, Irvinestown, from its junction with Lisnarick Road, Route B534, to a point approximately 310 metres west of that junction.

5.  Lisnarick Road, Route B534, Irvinestown, from a point approximately 260 metres west of its junction with Burfits Hill, Unclassified No. 9079, to its junction with Drumadravy Road, Route B534.

6.  Balliniska Road, Londonderry.

7.  Branch Road, Route B507, Londonderry.

8.  Buncrana Road, Route A2, Londonderry, from a point approximately 680 metres north-west of its junction with Pennyburn Roundabout, to its south-eastern junction with The Branch Roundabout.

9.  Buncrana Road, Route A2, Londonderry, from its north-western junction with The Branch Roundabout, to a point approximately 210 metres north-west of its junction with Whitehouse Road, Unclassified No. 1108.

10.  Culmore Road, Route A2, Londonderry, from its junction with Madam’s Bank Road, to a point approximately 84 metres north-east of its junction with O'Donovan Road.

11.  Skeoge Road, Route B521, Londonderry.

12.  Slievemore Roundabout, Londonderry.

13.  Templemore Road, Route B522, Londonderry.

14.  The Branch Roundabout, Londonderry.

Article 4

SCHEDULE 2 Revocations

1.  Item 22 of the Fifth Schedule to the Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1973(2).

2.  Item 9 of the Schedule to the Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 4) Order (Northern Ireland) 1982(3).

3.  Article 4, items 11, 12, 13 and 17 of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 to the Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 6) Order (Northern Ireland) 1984(4).

4.  Item 7 of Schedule 1 to the Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 2) Order (Northern Ireland) 1988(5).

5.  Item 6 of Schedule 1 to the Roads (Speed Limit) (No. 2) Order (Northern Ireland) 1994(6).

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order:

(a) increases from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour the speed limit on the restricted roads specified in Schedule 1 (Article 2);

(b) reduces from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour the speed limit on the restricted road specified in Article 3; and

(c) revokes the provisions described in Schedule 2, which are spent (Article 4).
