(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order provides for the attainment targets and programmes of study specified in relation to key stages 3 and 4 of a pupil’s compulsory schooling in the document published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in January 1995 entitled “Modern Foreign Languages in the National Curriculum” (ISBN 0 11 270889 7) to have effect for the purpose of specifying those elements of the National Curriculum for modern foreign languages.
These provisions apply with effect from 1st August 1995 for pupils in key stage 3 at schools in England and Wales. In accordance with the amendments made to section 3 of the Education Reform Act 1988 by the Education (National Curriculum) (Foundation Subjects at Key Stage 4) Order 1994 (S.I. 1994/1814), these provisions apply to pupils in key stage 4 at schools in England only, from 1st August 1996 for pupils in the first year of that key stage and from 1st August 1997 for pupils in the second year of that key stage. No provision is made in respect of pupils in the fourth key stage at schools in Wales.
This Order supersedes the provisions of the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Modern Foreign Languages) Order 1991.
