Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend regulation 6 of the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) (Large Goods and Passenger-Carrying Vehicles) Regulations 1990 so that a person who has abnormal sight in one or both eyes and who does not fall within sub-paragraph (i) of regulation 6(1)(b) has a relevant disability for the purposes of the Road Traffic Act 1988 if—

(a)in the case of a person who, on the coming into force of these Regulations, holds a licence entitling him to drive large goods or passenger-carrying vehicles—

(i)the visual acuity in his better eye is worse than 6/9, and

(ii)the visual acuity in his poorer eye is worse than 6/12, and

(iii)in the case of a person who wears glasses or contact lenses, the uncorrected acuity in each of his eyes is worse than 3/60;

(b)in any other case—

(i)the visual acuity in his better eye is worse than 6/9, or

(ii)the visual acuity in his poorer eye is worse than 6/12, or

(iii)in the case of a person who has to wear glasses or contact lenses to ensure that the visual acuity in his better eye is no worse than 6/9 and/or that the visual acuity in his poorer eye is no worse than 6/12, the uncorrected acuity in each of his eyes is no worse than 3/60.
