The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in exercise of the powers vested in him by section 7(1) and (2)(a) of the Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, and after consultation with such organisations as appear to him appropriate as representing any interests concerned, hereby makes the following regulations:—
1.—(1) These regulations may be cited as the Universities and College Estates Act 1925 (Amendment) Regulations 1978 and shall come into operation on 19th April 1978.
(2) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply for the interpretation of these regulations as it applies for the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.
2. The Universities and College Estates Act 1925, as amended by the Universities and College Estates Act 1964, shall be amended in accordance with the provisions of the Schedule to these regulations.

Regulation 2
1. In paragraphs (i) and (iii) of section 10(1) (regulations respecting mining leases by a university or college), for the word “acreage” there shall be substituted the word “area”.
2. In section 15(1) (power of a university or college to grant land for public and charitable purposes),—
(i)for the words “one acre” there shall be substituted the words “0.40 hectare”;
(ii)for the words “five acres” there shall be substituted the words “two hectares”.
These Regulations, which come into operation on 19th April 1978, amend the Universities and College Estates Act 1925 by substituting, in section 10(1), the word “area” for the word “acreage” and, in section 15(1), the words “0.40 hectare” for the words “one acre” and the words “two hectares” for the words “five acres”. The effect of the substitution in section 15(1) is to reduce slightly the area that may be granted by a University or College for any purpose mentioned in section 15(1)(i), (ii) and (iii) (the conversion of one acre being 0.405 ha and of five acres being 2.025 ha).
