The Smoke Control Areas (Authorised Fuels) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010

The Department of the Environment makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 2(2) of the Clean Air (Northern Ireland) Order 1981(1).

In accordance with that Article, the Department of the Environment has had regard, amongst other things, to the sulphur content of the fuels described in regulation 2.

Citation and commencement

1.  These Regulations may be cited as the Smoke Control Areas (Authorised Fuels) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010, and shall come into operation on 30^th April 2010.

Amendments

2.—(1) In the Schedule to the Smoke Control Areas (Authorised Fuels) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2008(2), in paragraph 18, after “Ecoal briquettes”, insert “(also marketed as Homefire Ecoal briquettes)”.

(2) After paragraph 22 of the same Schedule, insert—

“22A   Homefire Fire Logs, manufactured by De Lange B.V., Rustenburgerweg 3, 1646 WJ Ursem, the Netherlands, which—

(a) comprise slackwax (as to approximately 50% of the total weight) and sawdust (as to approximately 50% of the total weight);

(b) were manufactured from those constituents by a process of heat treatment and extrusion;

(c) are firelogs approximately 280 millimetres in length and 75 millimetres x 75 millimetres with a groove running along each of the four 280 millimetre length faces;

(d) have an average weight of 1.1 kilograms per firelog; and

(e) have a sulphur content not exceeding 0.2% of the total weight.”.

(3) After paragraph 44 of the same Schedule, insert—

“44A   Tiger Tim Firelogs, manufactured by De Lange B.V., Rustenburgerweg 3, 1646 WJ Ursem, the Netherlands, which—

(a) comprise slackwax (as to approximately 50% of the total weight) and sawdust (as to approximately 50% of the total weight);

(b) were manufactured from those constituents by a process of heat treatment and extrusion;

(c) are firelogs approximately 280 millimetres in length and 75 millimetres x 75 millimetres with a groove running along each of the four 280 millimetre length faces;

(d) have an average weight of 1.1 kilograms per firelog; and

(e) have a sulphur content not exceeding 0.2% of the total weight.”.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend the Smoke Control Areas (Authorised Fuels) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2008 (S.R. 2008 No. 415), to add a new fuel under the marketing names of Homefire Fire Logs and Tiger Tim Firelogs, to the list of fuels declared to be authorised fuels, for the purposes of Article 2(2) of the Clean Air (Northern Ireland) Order 1981. They also add another marketing name for one of the existing fuels (Ecoal briquettes).
