The Department of Education makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by Articles 35(1) and (2), 36(1) to (5), 40(3) and 90(3) of the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998(1).
1. These Regulations may be cited as the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Approval of Qualifications) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2007 and shall come into operation on 19th October 2007.
2.—(1) The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Registration of Teachers) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004(2) shall be amended as provided by paragraphs (2) and (3).
(2) In regulation 2 for the definition of “qualified teacher” substitute—
““qualified teacher” means a teacher who has such qualifications as are approved by the Council.”
(3) In regulation 3 after “a person is not eligible for registration” insert “unless he is a qualified teacher or”.

These Regulations amend the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Registration of Teachers) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004.
The definition of qualified teacher is amended so as to provide for approval of qualifications by the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland.
Regulation 3 is amended to include a condition that a person is not eligible for registration unless he is a qualified teacher.
