Mae'r Gorchymyn hwn yn dynodi'r ysgolion annibynnol a enwir yn ysgolion sydd â chymeriad crefyddol.
O dan adran 124A o Ddeddf Safonau a Fframwaith Ysgolion 1998, caniateir i ysgolion annibynnol sydd wedi eu dynodi felly roi sylw i ystyriaethau crefyddol penodol pan fyddant yn gwneud penderfyniadau ynghylch cyflogaeth benodedig mewn perthynas â staff sy'n addysgu.
Nid yw dynodiad gan y Gorchymyn hwn yn fodd ynddo'i hun i ennill cymeriad crefyddol neu newid cymeriad crefyddol. Yr hyn a wnaiff dynodiad yw cydnabod nodweddion presennol penodol yr ysgol neu ei chorff llywodraethu fel y'u disgrifir yn Rheoliadau Ysgolion Annibynnol (Cymeriad Crefyddol Ysgolion) (Cymru) 2003.
