An Act to advance the date for the extension of the local government franchise; to provide for annual registers of parliamentary and local electors; to postpone triennial elections for local authorities; and to alter the method of filling casual vacancies in local authorities other than county boroughs and boroughs; and for purposes connected with those matters or any of them.

(1)This Act may be cited as the Electoral Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1971 and shall be construed as one with the Electoral Law Acts (Northern Ireland) 1962 to 1969 and those Acts and this Act may be cited together as the Electoral Law Acts (Northern Ireland) 1962 to 1971.
(2)In this Act, the expression “the principal Act” means the Electoral Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1962 [1962 c.14] and expressions to which a meaning is assigned by that Act shall have the same meaning for the purposes of this Act.
