<Text>The National Assembly for Wales has consulted, in accordance with section 3(7) of the Education (Schools) Act 1997<FootnoteRef Ref="f00001"/>, such bodies as appear to it to be appropriate and representative of schools which provide assisted places under section 2(1) of that Act.</Text>

<Text>These Regulations amend the Education (Assisted Places) Regulations 1997 (“the <Abbreviation Expansion="Education (Assisted Places) Regulations 1997 (S.I. 1997/1968)">1997 Regulations</Abbreviation>”) in respect of a school year beginning on or after 1st September 2002. The 1997 Regulations prescribe arrangements for pupils who are eligible to continue to hold assisted places at independent schools by virtue of section 2 of the Education (Schools) Act 1997, notwithstanding the abolition of the assisted places scheme by section 1 of that Act.</Text>

<Text>The deduction to be made in “relevant” income in respect of dependent relatives under regulation 10(4) and (6) of the 1997 Regulations is increased from £1,430 to £1,465.</Text>
</P>
<P>
<Text>The level of income at or below which fees are to be wholly remitted is set at £11,368 instead of £11,116, with corresponding increases in the extent of remission where “relevant” income exceeds that sum.</Text>
