The Greater London Authority (Specified Activities) Order 2013

Coming into force

The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 34A of the Greater London Authority Act 19991 with the consent of the Treasury, makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement1

This Order may be cited as the Greater London Authority (Specified Activities) Order 2013 and shall come into force on 20th May 2013.

Interpretation2

In this Order, “management and exploitation” includes acquisition, disposal, development and holding.

Activities carried on for a commercial purpose3

The activities specified in paragraph (2) are specified activities for the purposes of section 34A (restriction on exercise of certain powers except through a taxable body) of the Greater London Authority Act 1999.

The specified activities are the management and exploitation of land on a commercial basis with a view to the realisation of a profit in connection with the Greater London Authority’s housing, regeneration and economic development functions under the Greater London Authority Act 1999.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

Section 224 of the Localism Act 2011 amended the Greater London Authority Act 1999 by inserting section 34A, which requires the Greater London Authority, if carrying on specified activities for a commercial purpose, to do so through a taxable body. This Order specifies activities for the purposes of that section.

An impact assessment has not been prepared for this instrument as no impact on the private or voluntary sectors is foreseen.
