The Secretary of State is a Minister designated for the purpose of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972(1) in relation to measures for safety as respects, among other products, detergents; provisions concerning the composition, labelling, marketing, classification or description of, among other products, detergents(2); measures relating to consumer protection(3); and measures relating to the environment(4).

The Secretary of State makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972.

1972 c.68; section 2(2) was amended by Part 1 of the Schedule to the European Union (Amendment) Act 2008 (c.7) and by section 27(1)(a) of the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Act 2006 (c.51). The power of the Minister to make Regulations in relation to matters in, or as regards Scotland, is preserved by section 57(1) of the Scotland Act 1998 (c.46).
