The General Dental Council have made the General Dental Council (Professions Complementary to Dentistry) (Business of Dentistry) Rules 2006 as set out in the Schedule to this Order.

In accordance with section 50C(2) and (3) of the Dentists Act 1984(1) such Rules shall not come into force until approved by order of the Privy Council.

Having considered the Rules, their Lordships approve them.

This Order may be cited as the General Dental Council (Professions Complementary to Dentistry) (Business of Dentistry) Rules Order of Council 2006 and shall come into force on 31st July 2006.

SCHEDULEThe General Dental Council (Professions Complementary to Dentistry) (Business of Dentistry) Rules 2006

The General Dental Council make the following Rules in exercise of their powers conferred under section 41(1)(b) of the Dentists Act 1984(2).

Citation and commencement

1.  These Rules may be cited as the General Dental Council (Professions Complementary to Dentistry) (Business of Dentistry) Rules 2006 and shall come into force on 31st July 2006.

Classes of registered dental care professionals prescribed for the purposes of section 41 of the Dentists Act 1984

2.  The classes of registered dental care professionals prescribed for the purposes of section 41(1)(b) of the Dentists Act 1984 (restriction on individuals who may carry on the business of dentistry) are those persons registered in the dental care professionals register under the titles which apply to the professions pursued by—

(a)clinical dental technicians;

(b)dental hygienists;

(c)dental nurses;

(d)dental technicians;

(e)dental therapists; and

(f)orthodontic therapists.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order, which is made under the Dentists Act 1984 (“the Act”), approves Rules made by the General Dental Council specifying classes of dental care professionals registered under the Act.

The effect of specifying a class of registered dental care professionals in the Rules is that a member of such a class may carry on the business of dentistry as an individual under section 41 of the Act (subject to the further provisions of that section).
