This Order varies section 153(1) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. It enables the Secretary of State, with the consent of the Treasury, to give financial assistance to, or for the purposes of, the Bio-energy Infrastructure Scheme. It extends to England, Wales and Northern Ireland only.
The purpose of the Scheme is to provide grant aid to farmers, foresters and businesses to help the development of the supply chain required to harvest, store, process and supply biomass to energy end-users. Details of the Scheme are available on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' website at http://www.defra.gov.uk.
