<dc:description>This Order amends the Protection of Animals (Anaesthetics) Act 1954 insofar as it applies to England only, by specifying that a pig may only be castrated without anaesthetic before it has reached the age of 8 days. This amendment is required in order to implement Commission Directive 2001/93/EC (OJ L 316 1.12.2001 p.36). It replaces the Protection of Animals (Anaesthetics) (Amendment) Order 2003 which was defective and which was revoked by the Protection of Animals (Anaesthetics) (Amendment) Order 2002 (S.I. 2002/3215). Conditions that apply to the keeping of pigs are contained in the Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2000 as amended.</dc:description>
