<Text>These Regulations may be cited as the European Specialist Medical Qualifications Amendment Regulations 2002 and shall come into force on 17th April 2002.</Text>

<Title>Amendment of the European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order 1995</Title>

<Text>The European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order 1995<FootnoteRef Ref="f00002"/> shall be amended in accordance with the following provisions of this regulation.</Text>

<Text>In paragraph (4) of article 7 after the word “published” insert “following approval by the <Abbreviation Expansion="Specialist Training Authority">STA</Abbreviation>”.</Text>

<Text>After paragraph (4) of article 8 insert the following paragraph—</Text>

<Text>In order to satisfy the STA that a doctor has particular expertise in a field such that he is entitled to have that expertise indicated in the register under paragraph (4)(b), the doctor must satisfy the STA that he has satisfactorily completed—</Text>
<P3>
<Pnumber>a</Pnumber>
<P3para>
<Text>an STA approved sub-speciality training scheme in the United Kingdom; or</Text>
</P3para>
</P3>
<P3>
<Pnumber>b</Pnumber>
<P3para>
<Text>any other sub-speciality training scheme outside the United Kingdom that the STA is satisfied is equivalent to an STA approved sub-speciality training scheme.</Text>

<Text>These Regulations amend the European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order 1995 (“the <Abbreviation Expansion="European Specialist Medical Qualifications Order 1995 (S.I. 1995/3208)">1995 Order</Abbreviation>”), which implemented European obligations contained principally in Council Directive <Citation URI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/european/directive/1993/0016" id="c00001" Class="EuropeanEconomicCommunityDirective" Year="1993" Number="16">93/16/<Acronym Expansion="European Economic Community">EEC</Acronym></Citation> (<Acronym Expansion="Official Journal">OJ</Acronym> <Abbreviation Expansion="Number">No.</Abbreviation> L165, 7.7.93, p. 1) relating to the training of specialist doctors and mutual recognition of their qualifications.</Text>

<Text>Article 7(4) of the 1995 Order is amended to provide that the curriculum and any other requirements relating to the training for each speciality must be approved by the Specialist Training Authority (“STA”) prior to publication.</Text>
</P>
<P>
<Text>Article 8 is amended to provide that for sub-speciality recognition on the specialist register, a doctor must either satisfy the STA that he has satisfactorily completed an STA approved sub-speciality training scheme in the <Acronym Expansion="United Kingdom">UK</Acronym> or that he has satisfactorily completed any other sub-speciality training scheme outside the UK, which the STA is satisfied is equivalent to an STA approved sub-speciality training scheme.</Text>

<P>
<Text>Part II of Schedule 2 to the 1995 Order is amended by adding a new speciality (pharmaceutical medicine) to the list of “Other Specialities”.</Text>
