<Text>Whereas the Boundary Committee for England<FootnoteRef Ref="f00001"/>, acting pursuant to section 15(4) of the Local Government Act 1992<FootnoteRef Ref="f00002"/>, has submitted to the Electoral Commission<FootnoteRef Ref="f00003"/> a report dated July 2002 on its review of the district of Chichester together with its recommendations:</Text>

<Text>And whereas the Electoral Commission have decided to give effect, with one modification, to those recommendations:</Text>
</P>

<Text>And whereas a period of not less than six weeks has expired since the receipt of those recommendations:</Text>

<Text>Now, therefore, the Electoral Commission, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by sections 17<FootnoteRef Ref="f00004"/> and 26<FootnoteRef Ref="f00005"/> of the Local Government Act 1992, and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following Order:</Text>

<Text>This Order may be cited as the District of Chichester (Electoral Changes) Order 2002.</Text>

<Text>This Order shall come into force—</Text>

<Title>Interpretation</Title>

<Text>In this Order—</Text>

<Text>“district” means the district of Chichester;</Text>
</Para>
</ListItem>
<ListItem>
<Para>
<Text>“existing”, in relation to a ward, means the ward as it exists on the date this Order is made;</Text>
</Para>

<Text>any reference to the map is a reference to the map marked “Map referred to in the District of Chichester (Electoral Changes) Order 2002”, of which prints are available for inspection at—</Text>

<Title>Wards of the district of Chichester</Title>

<Text>The existing wards of the district<FootnoteRef Ref="f00006"/> shall be abolished.</Text>
</P2para>

<Text>The district shall be divided into twenty-nine wards which shall bear the names set out in column (1) of Schedule 1.</Text>

<Pnumber>3</Pnumber>

<Text>The wards shall comprise the areas described in column (2) of that Schedule by reference to parishes or, where an area is not so described, the area designated on the map by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by red lines; and the number of councillors to be elected for each ward shall be the number specified in respect of the ward in column (3) of that Schedule.</Text>

<Text>Where a boundary is shown on the map as running along a road, railway line, footway, watercourse or similar geographical feature, it shall be treated as running along the centre line of the feature.</Text>

<Title>Electoral registers</Title>

<Text>The Electoral Registration Officer<FootnoteRef Ref="f00007"/> for the district shall make such rearrangement of, or adaptation of, the register of local government electors as may be necessary for the purposes of, and in consequence of, this Order.</Text>

<Text>This Order gives effect, with one modification, to recommendations by the Boundary Committee for England, a committee of the Electoral Commission, for electoral changes in the district of Chichester.</Text>
</P>
<P>
<Text>The modification concerns the boundary between the Fernhurst and Rogate district wards.</Text>
</P>
<P>
<Text>The changes have effect in relation to local government elections to be held on and after 1st May 2003.</Text>
</P>
<P>
<Text>Article 3 abolishes the existing wards of the district and provides for the creation of 29 new wards. That article and Schedule 1 also make provision for the names and areas of, and numbers of councillors for, the new wards.</Text>
</P>
<P>
<Text>Articles 4 and 5 make electoral changes in the parishes of Chichester and Selsey.</Text>
</P>
<P>
<Text>Article 7 obliges the Electoral Registration Officer to make any necessary amendments to the electoral register to reflect the new electoral arrangements.</Text>
</P>

<Text>Article 8 revokes the District of Chichester (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1977 (<Acronym Expansion="Statutory Instrument">S.I.</Acronym> <Citation URI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/uksi/1977/865" id="c00001" Class="UnitedKingdomStatutoryInstrument" Year="1977" Number="0865">1977/865</Citation>), with the exception of article 5.</Text>

<Text>The areas of the new district wards are demarcated on the map described in article 2. Prints of the map may be inspected at all reasonable times at the offices of Chichester District Council and at the principal office of the Electoral Commission at Trevelyan House, Great Peter Street, London SW1P 2HW.</Text>
