The Secretary of State for Health, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 29 and 126(4) of the National Health Service Act 1977(1) hereby makes the following Regulations:

Citation, commencement and extent

1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the National Health Service (General Medical Services) Amendment (No. 3) Regulations 2000 and shall come into force on 1st August 2000.

(2) These Regulations extend to England only.

Amendment of the National Health Service (General Medical Services) Regulations 1992

2.  In Schedule 10 of the National Health Service (General Medical Services) Regulations 1992(2), the following entries shall be inserted in such place in the alphabetical order of the entries as is appropriate—

• finasteride 1mg tablets

• Propecia

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations further amend the National Health Service (General Medical Services) Regulations 1992 (“the principal Regulations”) which regulate the terms on which doctors provide general medical services under the National Health Service Act 1977.

Regulation 2 adds the drug Propecia (finasteride 1mg) to the list in Schedule 10 to the principal Regulations, which lists drugs and other substances which may not be prescribed for supply in the course of pharmaceutical services under the National Health Service Act 1977.

Section 126(4) was amended by the 1990 Act, section 65(2). As regards Wales, the functions of the Secretary of State under sections 15(1), 29 and 126(4) of the 1977 Act are transferred to the National Assembly for Wales under article 2 of, and Schedule 1 to, the National Assembly for Wales (Transfer of Functions) Order 1999, S.I. 1999/672; these Regulations therefore extend only to England.
