This Order sets out the Secretary of State’s objectives for the policing of the areas of all police authorities established under section 3 of the Police Act 1996. The objectives replace those set out in the Police (Secretary of State’s Objectives) Order 1998 which is revoked by this Order. Section 6(2)(a) of the 1996 Act requires police authorities to have regard to these objectives in the discharge of their functions. Local policing objectives determined under section 7 of the 1996 Act must be consistent with these objectives. Section 8 of the 1996 Act requires police authorities to issue local policing plans which must give particulars of these objectives.
