ENTERPRISE ZONES

The Sunderland and Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zones (Designation of Enterprise Zone Authorities) Order 1998

Coming into force

Whereas the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation is the body designated as the enterprise zone authority for the area designated as an enterprise zone under the Sunderland (Hylton Riverside and Southwick) Enterprise Zone (Designation) Order 19901 and for the four areas designated as enterprise zones under the Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zones (North Tyneside and South Tyneside) (Designation) Order 19962;

And whereas the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions intends to make an order dissolving that Corporation under section 166 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 19803;

Now, therefore, the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by paragraph 16 of Schedule 32 to the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:—

Citation and commencement1

This Order may be cited as the Sunderland and Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zones (Designation of Enterprise Zone Authorities) Order 1998, and shall come into force on 25th March 1998.

Designation of new enterprise zone authorities in place of the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation2

The Sunderland City Council is hereby designated as the enterprise zone authority for the Sunderland No.1-Hylton Riverside and Southwick Enterprise Zone4.

The North Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council is hereby designated as the enterprise zone authority for the Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zone No. 8: Baltic Enterprise Park5.

The South Tyneside Metropolitan Borough Council is hereby designated as the enterprise zone authority for the following enterprise zones:—

  • the Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zone No. 9: Viking Industrial Park–Wagonway West;

  • the Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zone No. 10: Viking Industrial Park–Blackett Street; and

  • the Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zone No. 11: Viking Industrial Park–Western Road6.

Date on which the City Council and the Metropolitan Borough Councils become enterprise zone authorities pursuant to this Order3

Each Council mentioned in article 2 shall become the enterprise zone authority pursuant to this Order on 25th March 1998.

This Order affects one enterprise zone in Sunderland (Hylton Riverside and Southwick), one in North Tyneside (Baltic Enterprise Park), and three at the Viking Industrial Park in South Tyneside (Wagonway West, Blackett Street and Western Road).

The Tyne and Wear Development Corporation was designated as the enterprise zone authority for those zones in the Sunderland (Hylton Riverside and Southwick) Enterprise Zone (Designation) Order 1990 and the Tyne Riverside Enterprise Zones (North Tyneside and South Tyneside) (Designation) Order 1996.

The Tyne and Wear Development Corporation is to be dissolved by an Order under section 166 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980. The Urban Development Corporations in England (Planning Functions) Order 1998 (S.I. 1998 No. 84) revokes the planning functions order and special development order relating to the Corporation on 25th March 1998.

This Order designates the district council for each zone as the enterprise zone authority, in place of the Corporation as from that date.
