The Borough of Taunton Deane (Electoral Changes) Order 1998

Coming into force in accordance with article 1(2)
Whereas the Local Government Commission for England, acting pursuant to section 15(4) of the Local Government Act 19921, has submitted to the Secretary of State a report dated November 1997 on its review of the borough2 of Taunton Deane together with its recommendations:
And whereas the Secretary of State has decided to give effect to those recommendations:
Now, therefore, the Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 173 and 26 of the Local Government Act 1992, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
Citation, commencement and interpretation1

This Order may be cited as the Borough of Taunton Deane (Electoral Changes) Order 1998.

This Order shall come into force on 6th May 1999, except that for the purpose of all proceedings preliminary or relating to an election to be held on or after that date this Order shall come into force on 10th October 1998.

In this Order—
“the borough” means the borough of Taunton Deane;
“existing”, in relation to a ward, means the ward as it exists on the date this Order is made;
any reference to “the map” is a reference to the map prepared by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions marked “Map of the Borough of Taunton Deane (Electoral Changes) Order 1998”, and deposited in accordance with regulation 27 of the Local Government Changes for England Regulations 19944; and
any reference to a numbered sheet is a reference to the sheet of the map which bears that number.
Wards of Taunton Deane2

The existing wards of the borough5 shall be abolished.

The borough shall be divided into twenty-seven wards which shall bear the names set out in column (1) of Schedule 1.

The wards shall comprise the areas described in column (2) of that Schedule by reference to parishes, or, where no area is so described, the area designated on the map by reference to the name of the ward and demarcated by red lines; and the number of councillors to be elected for each ward shall be the number specified in respect of the ward in column (3) of that Schedule.

Where a boundary is shown on the map as running along a road, railway line, footway, waterway or other similar geographical feature, it shall be treated as running along the centre line of the feature.
Wards of the parish of Cheddon Fitzpaine3

The parish of Cheddon Fitzpaine shall be divided into two parish wards which shall bear the names set out in column (1) of Schedule 2.

The parish wards shall comprise the areas described in column (2) of the Schedule by reference to wards of the borough, and the number of parish councillors to be elected for each parish ward shall be the number specified in column (3) of that Schedule.
Wards of the parish of Trull4

The parish of Trull shall be divided into two parish wards which shall bear the names set out in column (1) of Schedule 3.

The parish wards shall comprise the areas described in column (2) of the Schedule by reference to wards of the borough, and the number of councillors to be elected for each parish ward shall be the number specified in column (3) of that Schedule.
Wards of the parish of Wellington5
1
The existing wards of the parish of Wellington shall be abolished.

The parish shall be divided into four parish wards which shall bear the names set out in column (1) of Schedule 4; each parish ward shall comprise the area of the borough ward specified in respect of the parish ward in column (2) of that Schedule and the number of councillors to be elected for each parish ward shall be the number specified in column (3) of that Schedule.
Revocation6
The Borough of Taunton Deane (Electoral Arrangements) Order 1986 is hereby revoked.
