(This note is not part of the Rules)

These Rules amend the Secure Training Centres (Escorts) Rules 1998 so as to prohibit the searching of an escorted offender by an officer of the opposite sex or (where the offender is being stripped and searched) in the sight or presence of a person of the opposite sex.

To provide for the exceptional event where a second woman custody officer (authorised to perform escort functions in accordance with section 12 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994) is unavailable, these Rules also allow for the second person present to be either a custody officer or a constable.
