The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 2(9) and 15(5) of the Local Government Act 1988

, and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement1.

This Order may be cited as the Local Government Act 1988 (Defined Activities) (Exemptions) (Northumberland County Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 12th June 1998.

Exemption of other cleaning by Northumberland County Council2.

Other cleaning

See section 2(2)(c) of, and paragraph 3 of Schedule 1 to, the Local Government Act 1988.

by the council of the county of Northumberland shall not be treated as a defined activity so long as it is carried out in their area during the period beginning with 1st August 1998 and ending on 31st March 1999.

Exemption of sports and leisure facilities management by Suffolk Coastal District Council3.

The management of sports and leisure facilities

See section 2(2)(ee) of, and paragraph 8 of Schedule 1 to, the Local Government Act 1988. Subsection (2)(ee) and paragraph 8 were inserted by the Local Government Act 1988 (Competition in Sports and Leisure Facilities) Order 1989 (S.I. 1989 No. 2488).

by the Suffolk Coastal District Council shall not be treated as a defined activity so long as it is carried out at The Brackenbury Sports Centre, High Road East, Felixstowe, Suffolk, during the period beginning with 1st January 1999 and ending on 31st December 2000.

Under Part I of the Local Government Act 1988 (competition), work falling within certain defined activities may be carried out by local authorities only if particular conditions are fulfilled.

Article 2 of this Order exempts from the requirements of Part I the other cleaning work of Northumberland County Council so long as it is carried out in their area during the period beginning with 1st August 1998 and ending on 31st March 1999. Article 3 exempts the sports and leisure facilities management work of Suffolk Coastal District Council so long as that work is carried out at The Brackenbury Sports Centre, High Road East, Felixstowe, Suffolk during the period beginning with 1st January 1999 and ending on 31st December 2000.
