Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order makes changes in the boundary between the county of Warwickshire and the metropolitan county of West Midlands, affecting the Warwickshire districts of Rugby, Nuneaton and Bedworth, North Warwickshire, and Warwick, and the West Midlands districts of Coventry and Solihull. It also transfers areas between districts within those counties, affecting the boundary between Rugby and Warwick, and between Coventry and Solihull. Consequential changes to local government electoral areas, petty sessional divisions and coroners' districts are made.

The map and table forming part of this Note are a general guide only to the areas affected. The table gives in approximate terms the total amount of land and the population affected by each set of transfers. The map[s] described in article 2 should be inspected for full details of the transfers. Any person may inspect the maps at any reasonable time at the offices of each city, borough, metropolitan borough or district whose area is affected, and additionally at the offices of the Secretary of State for the Environment located in 2, Marsham Street, London SW1P 3EB.

The Local Government Area Changes Regulations 1976 contain general provisions regarding the effect of orders such as this one.

Transfers between Warwickshire (Rugby) and West Midlands (Coventry) – article 3 Area: 210 hectares Population: 25

General description of changes

Transfers and realignment of boundary along the A46 road in the following locations–

(i)

Ansty, near M6 motorway;

(ii)

Binley Woods, starting near Coombe Pool and running south to the vicinity of Piles Coppice;

(iii)

Tollbar End/Black Spinney/Willenhall Wood;

(iv)

High Bridge;

(v)

Hungerley Hall Farm.

Transfers between Warwickshire (Nuneaton and Bedworth, North Warwickshire, Warwick) and West Midlands (Coventry) – article 4 Area: 20 hectares Population: 10

Realignment of Coventry/Nuneaton and Bedworth boundary–

(i)

along Bennett’s Road in vicinity of The Crescent and Keresley Newland County Junior School;

(ii)

near the Mineral Railway/Houldsworth Crescent/Burrages Lane/A444 road/Rowleys Green Lane;

(iii)

in area west of Rowleys Green Lane near Woodshires Green/River Sowe/Industrial Estate;

(iv)

by transfer to Coventry of area at Woodshires Green, including part of hotel and of warehouse near Wilson’s Lane, south west of the M6 motorway.

Realignment of North Warwickshire/Coventry boundary along Wall Hill Road, from Watery Lane to a point south of Stone House Farm.

Changes in the Warwick/Coventry boundary as follows–

(i)

Transfer to Coventry of Finham Junior School and Finham Park Comprehensive School.

(ii)

Realignments in the vicinity of the A46 road at Baginton Bridge.

Transfers from West Midlands (Solihull) to Warwickshire (Warwick) – article 5 Area: 20 hectares Population: 220

Transfer of area west of Cromwell Lane, including Arnold Farm and part of Hodgett’s Lane.

Transfer of areas near Hob Lane, including Moat Farm and Burton Green Farm.

Transfer within Warwickshire from Warwick to Rugby – article 6 Area: 1 hectare Population: Nil
Minor realignment along River Avon near Coventry Airport.
Transfers within West Midlands between Coventry and Solihull – article 7 Area: 10 hectares Population: 390

Transfer to Solihull of area south of Birmingham Road, including Bonneville Close, James Dawson Drive, and related development.

Transfer to Solihull of area north west of Hollyberry Farm. Transfer to Coventry of sports ground at Berkswell.

Realignment of boundary in Tanner’s Lane/Duggins Lane area.
