The Church Representation Rules (Amendment) (No. 2) Resolution 1989

Coming into force

In pursuance of the powers conferred by section 7(1) of the Synodical Government Measure 19691 to amend by resolution of the General Synod the Church Representation Rules, that is to say, the rules contained in Schedule 3 to the said Measure, as amended by the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) Resolutions 1973 to 19842 and by the Diocese in Europe Measure 19803 the General Synod hereby resolve that the said rules shall be amended as follows:

Qualifications of Persons to be Chosen or Elected by Annual Meetings1

In rule 9, after paragraph (1A) there shall be inserted–

A baptised person who has the qualifications in sub-paragraphs (a) to (c) of paragraph (1A) of this rule and who–

a

is of eighteen years and upwards; and

b

is either a member of the parochial church council by virtue of paragraph (1A) above or a member of a local ecumenical project of which the parish forms part,

may be nominated for election as a parochial representative of the laity to the deanery synod.

Elections of Members of Diocesan Synods by Deanery Synods2

In rule 25 at the end of paragraph (3) there shall be inserted–

and members who were elected pursuant to rule 9(1B).

Membership of the House of Laity3

In rule 29 at the end of paragraph (2) there shall be inserted–

and members who were elected pursuant to rule 9(1B).

In Appendix I, in section 4 for the words “A person is qualified to be elected a parochial representative of the laity to the deanery synod if” there shall be substituted – “Subject to the provisions of rule 9(1B), a person is qualified to be elected a parochial representative of the laity to the deanery synod if”.

In Appendix I, in section 4 for the words “A person is qualified to be elected a parochial representative of the laity of the parochial church council if” there shall be substituted–

Subject to the provisions of rule 9(1A), a person is qualified to be elected a parochial representative of the laity to the parochial church council if

In Appendix I, in section 5 after the words “co-opted members” there shall be inserted “and members who were elected pursuant to rule 9(1B)”.

Citation, interpretation and commencement7

This resolution may be cited as the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) (No. 2) Resolution 1989, and the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) Resolutions 1973 to 1984 and this Resolution may be cited together as the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) Resolutions 1973 to 1989.

Any reference in this Resolution to a numbered rule or Appendix is a reference to the rule or Appendix, as the case may be, bearing that number in the Church Representation Rules, as amended by the Church Representation Rules (Amendment) Resolutions 1973 to 1984 and by the Diocese in Europe Measure 1980.

This Resolution shall come into force on the first day of January 1990.

The Resolution of the General Synod of the Church of England, which was passed in accordance with section 7(1) of the Synodical Government Measure 1969, amends the Church Representation Rules contained in Schedule 3 to that Measure to make it possible for certain non-Anglicans to be nominated for election to the House of Laity of a Deanery Synod.
