The Secretary of State for Social Services, considering it appropriate for the remuneration in respect of the services mentioned in the following Order to be paid by the bodies mentioned in it (whose functions would not otherwise include the function of paying remuneration), in exercise of powers conferred on him by section 103(1) of the National Health Service Act 1977(1) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:—
1. This Order may be cited as the National Health Service (Payment of Remuneration — Special Arrangement) Order 1988 and shall come into force on 6th June 1988.
2. Each District Health Authority and special health authority shall have the function of paying remuneration to any person in respect of pharmaceutical services provided by him which consist of the supply of drugs, medicines or listed appliances ordered by a medical practitioner in pursuance of that authority’s functions.

This Order enables a District Health Authority or a special health authority to remunerate chemists and others providing pharmaceutical services who have supplied drugs, medicines or listed appliances which have been ordered by a doctor in pursuance of the authority’s functions under the National Health Service Act 1977.
