In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 27(1)(e) and 35(4) of the Education Act 19801, and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, the Secretary of State for Education and Science, as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, as respects Wales, hereby make the following Regulations:

These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Schools and Further Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1988 and shall come into force on 1st January 1989.

The Education (Schools and Further Education) Regulations 19812 are hereby amended as follows—
a
in regulation 10(3) the words “paragraphs (5), (6) and (6A)” shall be substituted for the words “paragraphs (5) and (6)”; and
b
after regulation 10(6) there shall be inserted the following paragraph—
6A
Where, in the academic years 1988/89 and 1989/90 but before 1st January 1990, a session is devoted wholly or mainly to the provision to teachers employed at that school of training related to the introduction of the National Curriculum, that session shall be regarded for the purposes of this Regulation as a session on which the school has met and—
a
where only one session in a day is so devoted, paragraph (3) shall have effect as if the periods of three hours and of four hours there mentioned were, respectively, periods of one and a half hours and of two hours; and
b
where both sessions in a day are so devoted, paragraph (3) shall not apply in relation to that day:
Provided that this paragraph shall not have effect in relation to more than four sessions.
