In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by section 73(11) of the Education Reform Act 1988(1), the Secretary of State for Education and Science, as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, as respect Wales, hereby make the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Education (Grant-maintained Schools) (Termination of Power to Determine a Period of Suspension) Order 1988 and shall come into force on 31st December 1988.
2. 31st December 1988 is hereby appointed for the purposes of section 73 of the Education Reform Act 1988.

Section 73 of the Education Reform Act 1988 confers power on the Secretary of State to suspend the consideration and determination of statutory proposals published under section 12 or 13 of the Education Act 1980 (c. 20) in relation to the establishment, discontinuance and alteration of a school so as to allow time for the publication of proposals for acquisition of grant-maintained status for the school. By virtue of subsection (11) of section 73 of the 1988 Act that power does not apply in relation to proposals under section 12 or 13 of the 1980 Act published on or after a date appointed for the purposes of section 73 by order made by the Secretary of State. This Order appoints 31st December 1988 for the purposes of that section.
