In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by section 61(1) of the Education Reform Act 19881, the Secretary of State for Education and Science, as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, as respects Wales, hereby make the following Regulations:

These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Parental Ballots for Acquisition of Grant-maintained Status) (Prescribed Body) Regulations 1988 and shall come into force on 20th September 1988.

The Electoral Reform Society whose principal office is at 6 Chancel Street, Blackfriars, London SE1 is hereby prescribed for the purposes of section 61(1) of the Education Reform Act 1988.

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

Under section 61 of the Education Reform Act 1988 a ballot of parents of registered pupils at a school is required to be held as part of the procedure for applying for grant-maintained status. By virtue of subsection (1) of that section such a ballot must be held by a body prescribed in regulations made by the Secretary of State. These Regulations prescribe the Electoral Reform Society for the purposes of that subsection.
