The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of powers conferred on him by section 33(2) of the Pilotage Act 1987(1) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf hereby makes the following Order:—
1. This Order may be cited as the Pilotage Act 1987 (Commencement No. 1) Order 1987.
2. The provisions of the Act specified in the first column of the Schedule to this Order (which relate to the matters specified in the second column of that Schedule) shall come into force on 1st September 1987.

This Order brings into force certain provisions of the Pilotage Act 1987; namely—
(a)in Part III, sections 24 and 25 which concern the abolition of pilotage authorities and transfer of staff on the day (to be) appointed for the coming into force of Part I of the Act, and section 28 (pilots compensation schemes);
(b)certain supplementary provisions in Part IV; and
(c)paragraphs 1 to 4 of Schedule 1 (transitional and saving provisions).
This is the first Commencement Order for the Pilotage Act 1987. Section 27 (functions and constitution of Pilotage Commission pending abolition) came into force with the passing of the Act.
