The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 63(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1972(1), and now vested in him(2), and of all other enabling powers, and after consultation with representative organisations in accordance with the provisions of section 199(2) of that Act, hereby makes the following Regulations:—
1. These Regulations shall come into operation on 1st April 1986 and may be cited as the Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) (Amendment) Regulations 1986.
2. The Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) Regulations 1979(3) shall be amended so as to have effect in accordance with the following provisions of these Regulations.
3. In regulation 3 (Interpretation), in paragraph (1), after the definition of “Member State” insert the following definition:—
““moped”
4. In Schedule 2—
(a)after item 14 insert item 14A as specified in the Schedule to these Regulations;
(b)after item 27 insert item 27A as specified in the Schedule to these Regulations;
(c)in items 37B and 37C, in column (6), for “1, 2 and 11” substitute “1 and 2”;
(d)after item 37C insert item 37D as specified in the Schedule to these Regulations; and
(e)after item 44A insert item 48 as specified in the Schedule to these Regulations.
5. In Schedule 3, for paragraph 11 substitute the following paragraph:—
“11. The marking relating to item 37A or 37D may be used as an alternative to the marking relating to item 37 where there is insufficient space to affix on the lamp the marking relating to item 37.”.
6. In Schedule 4, after item 2A, insert item 2B as specified in the Schedule to these Regulations.

These Regulations further amend the Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) Regulations 1979 by prescribing—
(a) a new item numbered 14A in Schedule 2 being a marking relating to motor vehicles approved in respect of the safety-belt anchorages;
(b) a new item numbered 27A in Schedule 2 being a marking relating to advance warning triangles for motor vehicles;
(c) a new item numbered 37D in Schedule 2 being a marking relating to power driven vehicles and their trailers approved in respect of their incandescent filament lamps;
(d) a new item numbered 48 in Schedule 2 being a marking relating to motor vehicles approved in respect of the installation of lighting and light-signalling devices; and
(e) a new item numbered 2B in Schedule 4 being a marking relating to the rear-view mirrors of motor vehicles.
