The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 18 and 23 of the Local Government Act 1985 (“the Act”), hereby makes the following order:—

This order may be cited as the Local Government Act 1985 (New Authorities) (Appointed Days) Order 1985.

The day appointed for the establishment of the authority mentioned in section 18 of the Act is 1st September 1985.

The day appointed for the establishment of each of the authorities mentioned in sections 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28 of the Act is 15th September 1985.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Local Government Act 1985 abolishes the Greater London Council and the metropolitan county councils on 1st April 1986 (‘the abolition date’).

This order appoints the days upon which new authorities shall be established to exercise certain functions of those councils from the abolition date. The new authorities are:

(a) the Inner London Interim Education Authority (from the abolition date to be known as the Inner London Education Authority);

(b) the metropolitan county police authorities;

(c) the Northumbria Interim Police Authority (from the abolition date to be known as the Northumbria Police Authority);

(d) the metropolitan county fire and civil defence authorities;

(e) the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority;

(f) the metropolitan county passenger transport authorities.

The day appointed for the Inner London Interim Education Authority is 1st September 1985 and for the other authorities is 15th September 1985.

By virtue of section 19(6) of the Act, the Order brings Schedule 9 to the Act into force on 1st September 1985.
