Coming into Operation

The Secretary of State for Education and Science, after consultation with the Council of the Isles of Scilly, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 24 of the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964, hereby makes the following order:—
1. This Order may be cited as the Isles of Scilly (Public Libraries and Museums) Order 1965 and shall come into operation on 1st April 1965.
2. The Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964 shall apply to the Isles of Scilly as if the Isles were a county and the Council thereof were the county council, subject to the modification that in section 7(1) of that Act the words “comprehensive and” shall be deemed to be omitted.

This Order extends the Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964 to the Isles of Scilly and makes the Council of the Isles the library authority. Under the Act as modified by this Order it will be the duty of the Council to provide a library service which is efficient but not necessarily also comprehensive.
