Slander of Women Act 1891

1891 CHAPTER 51

An Act to amend the Law relating to the Slander of Women.

Be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows :

1Amendment of law

Words spoken and published after the passing of this Act which impute unchastity or adultery to any woman or girl shall not require special damage to render them actionable.

Provided always, that in any action for words spoken and made actionable by this Act, a plaintiff shall not recover more costs than damages, unless the judge shall certify that there was reasonable ground for bringing the action.

2Short title and extent.

This Act may be cited as the Slander of Women Act, 1891, and shall not apply to Scotland.
