Northern Ireland (Stormont Agreement and Implementation Plan) Act 2016

Legal background

  1. The Independent Reporting Commission will be established in an international treaty between the UK Government and Government of Ireland. Much of the legislation relating to the Commission, including provisions for the functions of the Commission and how it will be structured in order to deliver those functions, is therefore new. However, the following existing primary legislation is relevant to the provisions in this Act:
    • Northern Ireland Act 1998
    • International Organisations Act 1968
  2. The commentary on the Act explains any additional relevant legal background.
