5

The Regulations modify the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004 at paragraph 8 of Part I of Schedule 1 so as to substitute the words “the Work in Compressed Air Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004” for the words “the Work in Compressed Air Special Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1963” (regulation 22(2)).

6

The Regulations are supported by the Great Britain guidance document entitled “A Guide to the Work in Compressed Air Regulations 1996” (L96, HSE Books 1996, ISBN 0 7176 1120 5) and the addendum on oxygen decompression. In addition, British Standard (BS 6164:2001) Code of Practice for safety in tunnelling in the construction industry is also relevant.

7

In Great Britain, the corresponding Regulations are the Work in Compressed Air Regulations 1996 (S.I. 1996/1656).

8

A person who contravenes the Regulations is guilty of an offence under Article 31 of the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 and is liable, on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum (currently £5,000) or, on conviction on indictment, to a fine.
