id="section-253"><Pnumber PuncAfter="">253</Pnumber><P1para><P2 DocumentURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/nia/2016/18/section/253/1" IdURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/nia/2016/18/section/253/1" id="section-253-1"><Pnumber>1</Pnumber><P2para><Text>In this Part—</Text><UnorderedList Decoration="none" Class="Definition"><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-appropriate-care-or-treatment">appropriate care or treatment</Term>”, in relation to a person, means care or treatment which is (or care and treatment which are) appropriate in that person's case;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-appropriate-establishment">appropriate establishment</Term>” has the meaning given by section 167;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-approved-medical-practitioner">approved medical practitioner</Term>” means a medical practitioner approved by RQIA for the purposes of this Part;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-custodial-sentence">custodial sentence</Term>” has the same meaning as in Chapter 2 of Part 2 of the Criminal Justice (Northern Ireland) Order 2008 (see Article 4(1) of that Order);</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-disorder">disorder</Term>” has the meaning given by section 252;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-hospital-direction">hospital direction</Term>” has the meaning given by section 174;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-hospital-transfer-direction">hospital transfer direction</Term>” has the meaning given by section 224;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-interim-detention-order">interim detention order</Term>” has the meaning given by section 177;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-juvenile-justice-centre">juvenile justice centre</Term>” has the meaning given by Article 51(1) of the Criminal Justice (Children) (Northern Ireland) Order 1998;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“the period” of a public protection order without restrictions has the meaning given by section 181;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-prison">prison</Term>” has the same meaning as in the Prison Act (Northern Ireland) 1953;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-public-protection-order">public protection order</Term>” has the meaning given by section 167;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-public-protection-order-with-restrictions">public protection order with restrictions</Term>” has the meaning given by that section;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-public-protection-order-without-restrictions">public protection order without restrictions</Term>” has the meaning given by that section;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-remand-centre">remand centre</Term>” has the meaning given by section 2(b) of the Treatment of Offenders Act (Northern Ireland) 1968;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-the-responsible-medical-practitioner">the responsible medical practitioner</Term>”, in relation to a person liable to be detained in a hospital or other establishment by virtue of this Part, means the medical practitioner who is in charge of the person's care (see also subsection (2));</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-supervision-and-assessment-order">supervision and assessment order</Term>” has the meaning given by paragraph 1(1) of Schedule 7;</Text></Para></ListItem><ListItem><Para><Text>“<Term id="term-young-offenders-centre">young offenders centre</Term>” has the meaning given by section 2(a) of the Treatment of Offenders Act (Northern Ireland) 1968.</Text></Para></ListItem></UnorderedList></P2para></P2><P2 DocumentURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/nia/2016/18/section/253/2" IdURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/nia/2016/18/section/253/2" id="section-253-2"><Pnumber>2</Pnumber><P2para><Text>Regulations may provide that the medical practitioner in charge of a person's care may carry out prescribed functions of the responsible medical practitioner under this Part only if—</Text><P3 DocumentURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/nia/2016/18/section/253/2/a" IdURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/nia/2016/18/section/253/2/a" id="section-253-2-a"><Pnumber>a</Pnumber><P3para><Text>the practitioner is an approved medical practitioner; or</Text></P3para></P3><P3 DocumentURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/nia/2016/18/section/253/2/b" IdURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/nia/2016/18/section/253/2/b" id="section-253-2-b"><Pnumber>b</Pnumber><P3para><Text>any other prescribed condition is met.</Text></P3para></P3></P2para></P2><P2 DocumentURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/nia/2016/18/section/253/3" IdURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/nia/2016/18/section/253/3" id="section-253-3"><Pnumber>3</Pnumber><P2para><Text>Any reference in this Part to an offence punishable on summary conviction with imprisonment includes a reference to an indictable offence which may be tried summarily.</Text></P2para></P2><P2 DocumentURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/nia/2016/18/section/253/4" IdURI="http://www.legislation.gov.uk/id/nia/2016/18/section/253/4" id="section-253-4"><Pnumber>4</Pnumber><P2para><Text>For the avoidance of doubt, a remand, order or direction of a court under this Part is not to be regarded for the purposes of section 2 or any other purpose of this Act as an act done or decision made for or
