eId="part-3-crossheading-functions-of-authorised-officers"><heading>Functions of authorised officers</heading><section eId="section-102" uk:target="true"><num>102</num><heading>Authorised officers and meaning of “relevant purpose”</heading><subsection eId="section-102-1"><num>(1)</num><intro><p>An enforcing authority may authorise a person to exercise a function under a provision of this Part that—</p></intro><level class="para1" eId="section-102-1-a"><num>(a)</num><content><p>confers functions on an authorised officer, and</p></content></level><level class="para1" eId="section-102-1-b"><num>(b)</num><content><p>is specified in the authorisation.</p></content></level></subsection><subsection eId="section-102-2"><num>(2)</num><content><p>But an enforcing authority may only authorise a person to exercise functions that the authority considers the person suitably qualified to exercise.</p></content></subsection><subsection eId="section-102-3"><num>(3)</num><content><p>An authorisation under this section must be given in writing.</p></content></subsection><subsection eId="section-102-4"><num>(4)</num><content><p>An authorisation under this section may be varied or revoked by an instrument in writing.</p></content></subsection><subsection eId="section-102-5"><num>(5)</num><content><p>When exercising or seeking to exercise a function of an authorised officer, a person must, if asked, produce evidence of the authorisation.</p></content></subsection><subsection eId="section-102-6"><num>(6)</num><intro><p>In this Part—</p></intro><level class="para1" eId="section-102-6-a"><num>(a)</num><content><p>“<term refersTo="#term-authorised-officer" eId="term-authorised-officer">authorised officer</term>” means a person authorised under this section;</p></content></level><level class="para1" eId="section-102-6-b"><num>(b)</num><content><p>references to an “<term refersTo="#term-authorised-officer" eId="term-authorised-officer">authorised officer</term>” in relation to a function under this Part are to a person authorised under this section in respect of that function;</p></content></level><level class="para1" eId="section-102-6-c"><num>(c)</num><intro><p>“<term refersTo="#term-relevant-purpose" eId="term-relevant-purpose">relevant purpose</term>”, in relation to an authorised officer, means—</p></intro><level class="para2" eId="section-102-6-c-i"><num>(i)</num><content><p>investigating compliance with any requirement that the authority that authorised the officer has the function of enforcing, or</p></content></level><level class="para2" eId="section-102-6-c-ii"><num>(ii)</num><content><p>any other purpose relating to any function of
