52Inspection of returns and declarations.N.I.

(1)Any returns or declarations (including the accompanying documents) sent to the returning officer under section forty-one, section forty-six or section forty-seven shall be kept at the office of the returning officer or some convenient place appointed by him and shall at all reasonable times during two years next after they are received by him be open to inspection by any person on payment of a fee of [F1 5p],[F2 in the case of a return or declaration relating to a parliamentary election] and the returning officer shall on demand furnish copies thereof or of any part thereof at the price of [F1 1p][F2 in the case of a return or declaration relating to a parliamentary election,] for every seventy-two words.[F2 Where the return or declaration relates to a local election, the fee for inspection shall be £1 and the price of copies shall be 10p for each side of each page[F3 and this subsection shall have effect as if for the word sent there were substituted delivered].]

(2)After the expiration of the said two years the returning officer may cause all such returns and other documents as are referred to in sub-section (1) to be destroyed or—

(a)if the candidate or his election agent so requires shall return to the candidate all such documents other than those sent under section forty-one;

(b)if the person sending such documents under section forty-one so requires, shall return to that person the documents sent by him.
