The Bill of Rights 1688

1688 CHAPTER 2 1 Will and Mar Sess 2

An Act declareing the Rights and Liberties of the Subject and Setleing the Succession of the Crowne.

Modifications etc. (not altering text)

C1Short title given by Short Titles Act 1896 (c. 14), Sch. 1. This Act was given royal assent on 16th December 1689. The Chronological List in Statutes of the Realm, Vol. VI, attaches the Acts in this session to the year 1688. The 1st Parliament of William and Mary (the Convention Parliament) convened on 23rd February 1689 and the first session began on 20th March 1689 (still 1688 under the old method of reckoning). It appears that all the Acts of that Parliament (both sessions) are deemed to be Acts of 1688. The text of the Crown and Parliament Recognition Act 1689 (2 Will. and Mar.) gives 1688 as the year for all Acts of the Convention Parliament. The Short Titles Act 1896 did not attach either “1688” or “1689” to the title The Bill of Rights (chapter 2 of 1 Will. and Mar. Sess. 2). In the Republic of Ireland, chapter 2 is specifically given the title “Bill of Rights 1688” by an amendment to the Short Titles Act 1896 c. 14 (see Statute Law Revision Act 2007 Act of the Oireachtas No 28 of 2007, s 5(a))
