Editorial Information

X1This statute is of uncertain date. It is assigned by tradition to 17 Edward II. Ruffhead (Statutes at Large) included it as 17 Edw. II stat. 1 (Anno Dom. 1324) in his edition. Statutes of the Realm placed it after 17 Edw. II stat. 2 (p. 197) under the heading "Statutes of Uncertain Date" with the following note: "In those Editions which continue the Statutes beyond Edward II several Articles have been placed between the Reigns of Edward II and Edward III under the Head of “Certain Statutes made during the Reigns of K Henry III, K Edward I or K Edward II, but uncertain when or in which of their Times.” The Number and Nature of the Articles so classed vary in the several Editions. Under the present Head are now arranged all such Articles, the exact Date whereof appears uncertain, but which have been uniformly considered as made previous to Edward III and have been admitted either into any Edition of the Antiqua Statuta, or into any general Collection of the Statutes."

Statutes in Force reproduced a revised version of this statute in both modern English translation and Latin with the following note, which was derived from Statutes of the Realm: "This is inserted in all the Printed Copies as a Statute of 17 Edw. II: The Copy from MS. Cott. Claud. D. II. was printed by Cay; the Various Readings marked MS. Cott. and MS. Harl. are from a Cotton Manuscript, Appendix XVI, fo. 85. and a Harleian MS. No. 947."

On legislation.gov.uk it is currently incorrectly assigned to 15 Edw. II (1322) and we are in the process of re-locating it to 17 Edw. II (1324). We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

X2The original text of this Act was not modern English. The traditional translation appears first with obsolete characters modernised. The revised Latin text as reproduced in Statutes in Force (SIF) appears second as an image.
