On or after 1st April 2023 the Somerset Council is the sole principal authority for Somerset.

For the purposes of enactments relating to local government, there shall be a new district, whose area shall be co-terminous with Somerset; and the name of that new district is Somerset.

If the Somerset County Council passes a resolution that the word “county” should be omitted from its name, its name shall be “the Somerset Council” and subsection (3) of section 2 of the 1972 Act (constitution of principal counties in England) shall cease to apply so far as it prescribes the name of that council.
